Black women and their hair possibilities is a wonder unto itself. Like so may of my sistrens, I have experienced the varieties of African hair--the good, the bad and the ugly, though through my journey of tinkering with my hair I’ve realized no matter the finished product (be it processed or not) ugly it could never be. With that said, it is this very notion, this idea of fully appreciating that which is naturally mine (and yours!) that I have come to embrace and anticipate each and every time I leave Amazon’s. Nadra Smiley cares for my hair with patience and confidence required of anyone who’s mastered managing black hair, but with and creativity unmatched among her peers. Every two week, Nadra picks through my thick-long locs with strong, nimble fingers and always supreme intuition for managing a healthy, natural head of hair-constantly paying close attention to the well-being of my scalp and loc shafts. Nadra and the superb staff at Amazon’s seem to render magic in their nondescript South Side salon. African aesthetics. Trendy tresses. Corporate classiness. Whatever the request, the kinky creations rendered are unfailingly fresh and impressive. At best Nadra is a hair horticulturalist-coaxing the best out of our hair to blossom under her divine hands; at worst, she walks in the tradition of recognizable Midwest stylists who flat-out know what to do with our hair. Period.
Nadra started managing my hair years ago. She did start my locs and my hair was never in a terrbe state, but after regularly going to Amazon’s my hair well…took off. We even played around with color. Simply put: she is the best, hands-down! I get excited at the thought of another Amazon experience, almost as soon as I leave. Yes, that’s it! You know it too, the feeling of never wanting a good thing to stop, especially when it involves looking good and having confidence in your. Having good looking hair is the foundation of my style. My style is built around my hair and style is finished off with my hair. Hair is a big deal, whether you agree or not. And, I want only the most skilled professional tending to my locs. My experience with Nadra and Amazon’s has been highly professional and nothing short of consistent perfection and satisfaction. Even the salon itself holds a magnetic energy-cool and sophisticated, like just by selecting this salon you have selected to grow-up and remain true to your origins at the same time. I guess you could label the experience as “renewing.” I find a comfort-level at Amazon’s that is without the pretentiousness you’d expect to go along with a high quality product. I have been to other natural hair salons in the city and have had countless general conversations about salons and their stylists. Amazon and staff is the undisputed champ in the field. These sistas know hair. They know our hair! Is it time to get my hair done yet…?
